August Job Market Update: Better Numbers, Same Cautious Market

The August jobs report delivered some encouraging news. Employers added 162,000 jobs, the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%, and average hourly earnings increased 0.3%.

These numbers suggest the labor market is improving. However, this is not yet a wide-open hiring market.

Where Hiring Is Growing

Although overall hiring picked up, much of the job growth was concentrated in a few areas, including:

Food services
Local government education
Select construction-related roles

Several other major industries experienced little or no meaningful growth. This means opportunities are improving, but conditions can still vary considerably depending on a candidate’s industry, location, and experience.

What This Means for Job Seekers

In a selective hiring market, simply applying online and waiting for a response is rarely enough.

Relationships continue to matter. Candidates can improve their chances by focusing on:

Building and maintaining a strong professional network
Asking trusted contacts for introductions
Connecting directly with hiring managers and industry leaders
Clearly communicating their experience and value
Developing a consistent personal brand
Following up professionally after interviews and conversations

A thoughtful introduction or referral can help a qualified candidate stand out from hundreds of online applications.

The strongest job searches are intentional. They combine targeted applications with networking, relationship-building, interview preparation, and a clear message about what the candidate brings to an organization.

What This Means for Employers

Employers should also pay close attention to the people already on their teams.

During a cautious market, employees may remain in their current positions because they are uncertain about outside opportunities. As the labor market strengthens, those same employees may become more willing to explore a career move.

Organizations can prepare by asking important questions:

Are our strongest employees engaged?
Do they see opportunities to grow here?
Are managers communicating effectively?
Do we have a strong leadership pipeline?
Are we recognizing and developing the people we want to retain?

A stronger job market can quickly lead to increased turnover. Employers that invest in leadership, communication, career development, and employee engagement will be better positioned to retain their best people.

Intentional Action Still Matters

August was stronger. The opportunity is improving. But this remains a market where being intentional matters.

Job seekers need more than a polished résumé. They need a focused strategy, a compelling professional story, and relationships that can help open doors.

Employers need more than competitive compensation. They need engaged leaders, clear development opportunities, and a culture where people can see a future.

At OCM, we work on both sides of that equation. We help individuals navigate career transitions with greater clarity and confidence, while helping organizations build stronger, more engaged leaders and teams.

Whether you are searching for your next opportunity or preparing your organization for what comes next, OCM is here to help you Navigate Next.
